Catching Ambivalence

Hey Bills fan,

How you doin'?  Welcoming T.O. -- with his undeniable talent and natural athleticism -- to the herd?  Cursing the prospect of a divided locker room and media circus from football's top diva?  Yep, me too.

It's hard to figure Buffalo's 1-year, $6.5 million dollar deal for Terrell Owens.  The guy has top-notch speed, moves and hands.  His instinct for the ball is incredible.  T.O.'s addition takes huge pressure off Lee Evans and puts a serious gun in Trent Edwards' holster.  I realize Owens is 35 and well past prime.  Nonetheless, he's good.

He better be.  Because T.O. also comes with a lot of baggage. Controversy surrounds the man.  Owens has demonstrated a habit of calling out his quarterback -- questioning the ability, motives, and even sexual orientation of his "main men".  His behavior has been described as disruptive to his teams;  from players to coaches, from water boy to owner, everyone else in between, and even bystanders around.

That's why I end up liking this deal.  If any team in the league needs disruption from top to bottom, it is the Buffalo Bills.  What's the worst that could happen?

They miss the playoffs?  Big deal.  Buffalo hasn't made it out of the regular season since the last century.  Ultimately Terrell Owens wants T.O. to win.  And if he brings the Buffalo Bills along for the ride, I'm okay with that.

Maybe T.O. alienates his fellow players, gets them good and P.O.'d. Again, fine by me.  A little passion in Orchard Park (or, for God's sake!, the other T.O. -- Toronto, Ontario) would be a nice change of pace.

He might start by demanding James Hardy give up #81.  Then he could start racking up 100-yard games before calling out Evans and Edwards as lovers conspiring to keep the ball away from T.O.

By the time that gets to a head, the 1-year contract is up.  I hope.

Your truly,
Buffalo Phil(bony)

P.S.  Send Vicodin.

Agreed. I have never had a problem with athlete "troublemakers/loudmouths" as long as they get the job done (Randy Moss, Deion Sanders, Dennis Rodman, Jim McMahon, Allan Iverson, Manny Ramirez, etc...note that I am not including the criminals and thugs here). A shakeup may be just what the Bills need; when the most drama from a player in Bills history came from Thurman Thimas losing his helmet, you know that the franchise has been too safe (this is not at all meant to be critical of Ralph Wilson and his GMs and coaches over the years, who have consistently created and maintained a class organization).

Funny quote, though, in today's paper (am I the only one left who reads one?). Marv Levy: "I verified it a bit later that it was true and that my friend hadn't been drinking [when he told me about the TO deal]."

The biggest plus to TO's "troublemaking" rap is it's all legal.

He might have a big ego, sure. But he's never been in a hit & run or caught with a loaded (and unregistered) gun in a car reeking of pot.

Didn't see that Marv Levy quote. He always stressed character first. Staying legal is most important. But he wouldn't like TO's ego. Levy also might have been caught off guard at the organization's 'roll the dice' aggressiveness on this deal. Definitely an unexpected move.

Shake it up, baby.

The TO signing has got the Buffalo football pundits spinning. People who once talked down about the flashy athletes are lining up in the "this is good for Buffalo" category. I think they are going to like the attention whether good/bad. Let's face it any time that the Buff hits the national stage its good for these people.

It will be interesting to see how Coach Juron, the mild mannered polite guy, handles TO and the new Lynch problems! Looks like Ralph has given up his "class organization" mantra for a desire to win. I'm thinking the inmates are running the asylum at One Bills drive! It chaos people, cats & dogs living together.

Ralph must be 90 by now, he's earned the right to be crazy. I guess he figures "What have I got to lose?" and really what does he? Just hope he makes it to see TO put us back in the playoffs.
